Beach Rot

I'm sitting on the fronch (front porch, I mean. I don't speaka engrish) with total beach rot after a long stint at Alki today. When I got there the tide was completely out and the tide-pools were probably teeming with life. This is one of those nerdy sciency things that I geek out over and get really excited about - mostly because I think sea animals are weird and I want to poke them.
As much as I wanted to go poking around with the 5 year olds (and being probalby as excited as they are about it) I had a lot of gear so I couldn't.

Anyway, I was there for at least 3 hours. (Yes, Mama, I wore a sunscreen!) So now I feel all megatired and useless.

I was productive at the beach though. I have been putting off this painting project, mostly because of lack of good inspiration, so I brought a couple art books, my paints, and some canvases. Then I gave up on trying to be originall and totally ripped off Barnett Newman - but not really because I was not really following any Abstract Expressionist theory, and also I was making them on 8x10 canvases, not gigantic fill-your-peripheral-vision ones.

Anyway, the first one is okay. I think I could do better. I suppose I'll take a picture. later...

Bah. my brain is full of sunshine and I can't think anymore. Tonight I will do something brainless like watch mtv espaƱol until it's time to go to sleep.

Anemones rock. So do geoducks. And kelp. And seaweed. And little crabs. Beaches are only fun because of the critters and plants!

Is it weird that I also like the smell of low-tide? I was reminiscing about that today during my walk through Ballard. One thing I love about this city, and even Olympia, is that you can smell the water even if you can't see it. Not like in Spain where the only water you can smell is chlorinated and urinated...

i <3 beach.

and yes the geeky annoying fourth grader in me comes out whenever i'm lucky enough to find myself next to a tide pool. i used to think that if the sun was hot enough, it would boil the water and there would be all these tide pool soups dotted along the cliffs. maybe it's cuz i'm asian i think this.
